On Sunday, April 23rd, I woke up early in anticipation of seeing my favourite band, the only reason I paid $79 for an offshore ticket.
Every day, I had visited the Sanity tent, hoping to see Sunk Loto on the signing list. When I saw them at 3:30pm on Sunday, I felt excited at the prospect of meeting my favourite band.
1:00pm on Sunday, I arrived at the tent with my camera and EP on my mission to meet Sunk Loto. The sanity workers pumped vinegar Stroke out of the CD player, which played the EP many times in the 2 ½ hours I waited in the tent. At 3:30, I found myself 7th in line to meet them. The minutes passed by, and at 3:45, Jason with his new brown dreads headed up the paddock slowly followed by Sean, Luke and Dane. They looked like they were freezing their asses off like the rest of us.
They took their seats behind the signing table in the tent. I looked behind me and realised about 50-60 people had shown up.
Finally the lady let me through, and Jason said hi and all the usual stuff, he signed my EP and I moved to Dane who smiled and said hi. I didn’t want to hassle them all for photos with me, so I took an individual shot of each member, and got my pic with Jason. They were all cool about it, especially Luke who was patient when my camera didn’t work Anyways, from Dane, I moved onto Sean who was very nice, and then Luke. I had this guys hat which I was getting signed for him because he didn’t want to line up. I spoke to Luke for a few minutes, said thanks and walked away with the EP + hat, when I realised that Luke had forgot to sign my EP. I was scared for a minute, but went back in the tent and the sanity lady got him to sign it for me. I took a pic of all the guys but then I was told to move out by the Sanity guy. I then looked at the merchandise and decided to purchase a Sunk Loto beanie. I didn’t want to go back to my friends who couldn’t care less, so I positioned myself in the back of the line, and put my beanie on. This time I got to chat with the guys longer. I got another pic with Jason, this time getting them to sign the back of a sticker. I got to the end of the line – Luke, and asked if I could have a pic cos I had a few photos left, and he was like, yeah sure, come round here, and pointed in a circle motion of how to get to him.
Then the signing was over, and slowly they moved out of the tent. A Sanity lady gave me Jason’s Sprite can and Luke’s Coke can because I was a “huge fan” as she called me. I went outside to find that the crowd had died down and that Jason + Sean were standing there talking to some people. I approached Sean, and spoke to him for about 15 minutes, about the bands, the surfing and where they were staying. He told me he liked my beanie -*yay*- and a guy pulled off his hat to reveal a shaved head which shocked me. I thought I better not take up anymore of his time, so I said bye. I walked away on Cloud 9 knowing that I would be seeing them perform later.
11:45pm. I was in the drinking area when I realised I had 10 minutes till Sunk Loto played – 10 minutes to get to the front. I weaved my way in and out of the spaces, I was nearly there. Then I asked the guys up front if they’d let me in front and they did – and I got front row!
11:55pm. Sunk Loto hit the stage, with Luke and Jason in suits, Sean in a red shirt and Dane in a white tee. They started their hour long set with Lift, and finished it with Submission, my favourite song. They walked offstage and it was over. I’m sure Sunk Loto gained a lot of Victorian fans at Offshore. I can’t wait until Sunk Loto return to Melbourne, I’ll be there for sure.
